The Cobra Snake

June 28, 2008 · Leave a Comment

I want Mark Hunter’s job. He basically gets paid to go to parties, take photos of cute hipster girls and hang out with rock stars. He posts all his photos on his website thecobrasnake, a site which started out small and now people fly him out to parties all over the world to take photos, just so they can appear on thecobrasnake. He also has a sponsorship deal with Californian clothing brand RVCA. Thats him on the right with Dev Hynes (AKA, Lightspeed Champion).

Ratty and Ollie’s Birthday Party

June 22, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Ratty turned 23 (I think) on Friday and Ollie had a birthday on the 15th (No idea how old Ollie is but everytime I ask I never get a definite answer from anyone, I’m pretty sure nobody actually knows) so to celebrate they threw a party at Newcastle’s best eatery and hipster cafe; DB Social. It was pretty eventful, some random smackhead walked in on the street and chilled with us, he was pretty cool, he even had his name tattooed on his hand. Tom Finch nicked my camera, took a photo of his penis in the toilet then didn’t tell anyone, gave it back to me, and waited until I was showing somebody the photo’s I’d taken then tried to out me as some kind of gay for having a photo of somebody’s penis on my camera. Cheers Tom.

After we split from DB we headed towards eat disco, Newcastle premier free rave. Most had thought ahead and had ridden into town on fixies, however I hadn’t, as I live in town so there’s no need. I managed to get a lift from Pete on his back peg across town, try riding past sports bar on the back on an overly tall gentlemens BMX and not get heckled! Eat disco wasn’t too busy, so after a quick chinwag with Bish we headed towards Jukebox, although I split before this because of work the next morning. I found out the next day that Carmine and The Count had managed to sneak into Digital to see David Guetta by finding a crack in the smoking enclosure and shimmying through, saved them £12! Anyway, I took some crap pictures and you can see them by hitting the link.

Photos From Krakow

June 20, 2008 · 3 Comments

In February I got the chance to go to Krakow in Poland for my birthday, and while I was there I snapped a lot of pictures using H-Man’s Nikon D70 I had borrowed to see if I wanted to buy it. Turns out I do, as its an excellent camera and I’m dead happy with how these pictures turned out. I was originally keeping these to put in the fourth Agenda zine, but right now that doesn’t seem imminent so I though I’d post them here. Hit the link to continue reading and see the rest of the photos. Incidentally, the above photo is my favorite photo I’ve ever taken. I’m in love with it. It was taken from the common room in our hostel with a five second shutterspeed.

Sold my iPhone

June 19, 2008 · Leave a Comment

The title of this post will come as a shock to anyone that knows me, but yes, it is true. As an existing iPhone customer, on a £45 a month contract, I get the new iPhone 3G on the 11th July for free! And the best bit is that I get to keep my old one, so I listed it on ebay before it loses it’s value and it took a mere five hours to sell, for a large amount I may add. So I’ll be iPhone-less for the next three weeks or so, which is going to suck but I’m sure I’ll survive, bring on the 3G!

Summer is here!

June 16, 2008 · 4 Comments

You know summer is here in the UK when you can have a BBQ and you don’t freeze to death or get rained out. Thursday was definitely BBQ time in Newcastle, so I rushed over to Katie and Rach’s from work at 7 and got out BBQ on! Philippa’s homemade lamb burgers were a notable treat, as was all the food having been cooked by the time I’d arrived! (Cheers Dan) More photos and words after the jump.

Simon Le Fort

June 11, 2008 · Leave a Comment

During my gap year I worked as a supervisor at M&S in York and got the pleasure of working with this fellow, Simon Le Fort. In hindsight ‘working’ was not the correct term as all we did was mess around and cause trouble, but that’s not important. Simon is a very talented musician and was picked up by a record label about a year and a half ago. He finished his album ‘Tuesday Blue’ and moved back down to his hometown of Bristol in the hopes of making it big. Things went quiet for a while as the PR company his label employed fucked about a bit.

Anyway, fast forward to March and Simon was picked by Steve Harley, Cockney Rebel, to be his first support act since 1976, which is pretty impressive! As part of the tour Simon played the Sage in Gateshead and I went along to say hi and see him play. I managed to sneak in behind two fat older ladies and got the pleasure of the show for free. Simon’s a talented guy and make sure you check out his site, it was good to hang out with him again and have a laugh, and I’m glad he’s doing well!

Everyone loves free Nandos!

June 11, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Everyone loves free food, especially free food in a restaurant, and especially free Nando’s, so when this opportunity came up, there’s no way I was going to pass it up. Basically a new Nando’s opened in Eldon Square and they had two soft openings the two days before it opened officially. Somehow my boss, Tanya, managed to get some free meal vouchers for the soft opening, however due to some unforeseen technical difficulty, they weren’t able to open on our allotted day. To compensate this the manager offered Tanya free meals again the week after, however nobody from work could make it, and thats how I ended up with the vouchers! I went with Dan, Phil and co and we stuffed our faces with peri peri chicken. I love a good blag.

Muxtape

June 10, 2008 · Leave a Comment

I can’t quite remember where I became aware of the Muxtape website, but I think it was through Gnarwhale. Regardless, I think it’s a pretty cool idea, and have been trying to persuade my friends to make one so we can swop playlists. I made one which you can peep at tomkirkby.muxtape.com and if anybody makes one after reading this, drop me an email at takirkby@googlemail.com so I can hear it!

Block 7’s Party

June 8, 2008 · 1 Comment

So, Friday came. To say I was nervous was an understatement, I was pissy and getting agitated at the slightest thing. My co-DJ, Lewis however was about as relaxed as ever, making me more worried! The night was eventful to say the least, for starters when I got to Ninth Ave. to pick up Lewis and the gear, he hadn’t even unplugged any of it and had lost the iPod with all the songs to download on to my laptop on! After we found the iPod, made our way to the car and got to the venue, it was nearly time to start. Next issue was setting up, we’d forgotten the cable that connects the mixer to the amp, so that was out and to make matters worse, the software I was using to transfer the songs on his iPod to my laptop only allowed about 10 out of 80 to transfer, and duly crashing my vintage powerbook twice.

However it didn’t end there, at about 11:30, as the party was in full swing, and me and Lewis were dropping musical A-Bombs, the amp blew, or at least a fuse did, laving us with no bass, only treble. Nightmare. Luckily some fine young gentleman offered to walk a smal distance to get his speakers to keep the party running, thank god for that. Twenty minutes later we were back in business and the party was back in full swing, thanks to the kid and Dan, who went with to help out.

Fast forward to half one in the morning and two heavy-hitters in high vis jackets are at my side suddenly telling me to turn it down, seems not only are we way to loud, some moron has opened the fire door to the next block and caused the residents to barricade the door form the party and calls the cops. Shut down. We packed up and headed out, thanks to everyone that came, and the residents of flat c for letting Lewis and I play. I for one loved it and am itching to DJ again, it ruled! I gave Scott my point and shoot for the night and he half aimed some shots and got a few flicks, check them out by hitting the link.

Scott came to stay

June 8, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Scott has been up for the last couple of days, his exams have finished and he wanted to check out the Block Party and ride a bit. It’s been pretty sunny so we mainly just hung out at the skatepark and rode a little street. Thursday night we went over to Tom Bright’s new squeezes birthday BBQ and spent about two hours trying to light some disposable numbers bought from Poundland. There’s a lesson there somewhere. We ended cooking all the food in the kitchen and in true ironic fashion, the BBQ’s were eventually lit once all the food was cooked. Check out some more photos after the jump.
